How it started...
The preparation of this project and the formation of the consortium started already in spring 2011 at the Slovenian Intergenerational Festival that INTEGRA organises each year with the Municipality of Velenje. Together with various experts we discussed the potentials of such a project.
We soon found out the need to raise the awareness of health and social care professionals for this issue, and the importance to make it also a theme for adult education and vocational qualification. To our surprise, we did not find any relevant projects in the compendia of Lifelong Learning projects. There is a colourful multitude of projects that have developed teaching and learning materials for seniors, but none of them refers to the fact that health and social care professionals need more information about ageing and sexuality. Even in existing projects on ageing, medical and psychological aspects of sexuality of older people are covered on a research-oriented scientific basis, and not covered by educational models that address the interdisciplinary range in an under-standable way.
Although our first applications had not been successful, we continued our work without funding, and now we have finally received the approval for a Strategic Partnership under the new ERASMUS+ Programme.
The composition of our partnerships reflects the intention of this project to develop a holistic approach. The consortium comprises a multidisciplinary team that includes, on the one hand, medical and social research organisations that are specialised in various aspects of age and sexuality, and on the other hand adult education specialists and educational research institutions across Europe that show an ambitious interest in addressing the needs of older people not only by participating in the development, but also in subsequent offering awareness rising and training measures:
